Mission Education 2009 : From August 31 through September 2, SCJs, employees and collaborators from around the country took part in the Mission Education Conference hosted by Sacred Heart School of Theology. Begun in 1995, this was the sixth Mission Education Conference, which brings people together to learn about the Priests of the Sacred Heart, its mission, and their founder, as well as the works of the congregation. It is also a time of fellowship; a time for people who often only know each other by phone calls or e-mail to meet face-to-face. The next gathering will be in 2012 in South Dakota.

August Celebrations 2009 : The U.S. Province welcomed three men (Son Ho, Luis Fernando Orozco Cardona and Joseph Vu) to the novitiate on August 14 and celebrated the jubilees of six SCJs. Br. Andrew Lewandowski, Fr. Peter Mastrobuono and Fr. Tom Westhoven noted 50 years of religious life, and Fr. Paul Casper, Fr. Edward Griesemer and Br. Gabriel Kersting celebrated their 60th anniversary of vows.

July 09 Province Gathering : From July 20-23 members of the U.S. Province gathered at the Mercy Center in St. Louis to continue discussions begun at the 2008 Provincial Chapter. There, directional statements on Community, Aging and Ministry were formulated. The July gathering is the second of three planned over 18 months. The next will take place in January.

General Chapter 2009 : The General Chapter for the Priests of the Sacred Heart runs from May 18 through June 11 in Rome, Italy. Representatives of SCJ provinces, regions and districts from around the world come together every six years to review the status of the congregation and set direction for the future. It is also the time at which the general superior and his council are chosen. Photos pictured here were taken by Mary Gorski, who writes the daily reports for the chapter. GATHERING, January 09 : From January 12-16, members of the U.S. Province are at Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, IL, taking part in the first of three gatherings planned for the next year-and-a-half. The purpose of the gatherings is to further the dialogue begun at the 2008 Provincial Chapter. There, directional statements on Community, Aging and Ministry were formulated. “As a province we need to continue the dialogue on community, from which, serious discussions regarding our ministry can take root,” said a member of the Steering Committee. Working on the statement regarding aging has already moved forward with the Committee on Elder Life.

Vow Renewals 2008 : During the weekend of August 2-3 four men from the U.S. Province renewed their vows with the Priests of the Sacred Heart. At Sacred Heart Monastery in Hales Corners, Wis., Br. Clay Diaz, SCJ, Frater Duy Nguyen, SCJ, and Br. Long Nguyen, SCJ, renewed their vows. Fr. John Czyzynski, SCJ, novice master, received the renewals. On August 3, halfway across the world in South Africa, Fr. Jan de Jong, SCJ, received the renewal of Frater Greg Schill, SCJ. Fr. Jan was in South Africa teaching for the summer and Frater Greg was a month into his pastoral year in Pietermartizburg.

Joe Dean, Fr. Jack Kurps, Br. Duane Lemke, Fr. Steve Wiese and Br. Frank Presto (chair). The moderator is Sr. Barbara Stanbridge, IHM.

Lunar New Year 2008 : The Dehon Formation Community in Chicago hosted a Lunar New Year's party on Monday, January 28. Lunar New Year was still a few days away, but with the council in Chicago for meetings and Fr. Vien Nguyen's upcoming departure for language studies, the house moved the holiday up a few days. Among those at the celebration were students from Catholic Theological Union, as well as friends of the formation community.

Installation: Fr. Jan de Jong, SCJ : On Wednesday, January 30, Fr. Jan de Jong, SCJ, was installed as rector-president of Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. In his remarks at the end of the celebration, Fr. Jan clarified his position, noting that he felt that he was really the "pastor" of the seminary. Originally from The Netherlands, Fr. Jan first came to the United States in 1969 to teach at SHST.

Mastin's Mass of Thanksgiving 12-23-07 : Fr. Mark Mastin, SCJ, was ordained to the priesthood near his family home in the Cincinnati area December 15. A week later he celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Martin of Tours Parish in Franklin, Wis., the parish where he served as a deacon and will continue as a newly ordained priest. Communications Congress, Madrid : The SCJs ESIC Business and Marketing School in Madrid, Spain, was host to two communications gatherings in November. The first, November 23-24, was open to the public and included presentations from journalism and marketing professionals regarding the media and the Church. The second was for SCJs and those who work with them in communications. Approximately 140 people attended the first session, and about 40 were in the second. Fr. Claudio Dalla Zuanna was the general councilor in-charge of the congress and Mary Gorski represented the U.S. Province.

Provincial Conference, July 31 : July 31 through August 1 members of the U.S. Province gathered in Hales Corners for a Provincial Conference. The event was unique in that Fr. Richard MacDonald was the provincial superior on the first day and after his Tuesday evening installation, Fr. Thomas Cassidy was provincial superior on the second day. The conference was a time for SCJs to reflect on community, spirituality and ministry in preparation for future planning in the province.

CSE 2007 : The Christian Summer Experience (CSE) is hosted by the Vocation Office (Priests of the Sacred Heart, U.S. Province). Generally held in South Dakota, young men who are discerning a vocation to religious life have the opportunity to live, pray and work together in community. This year, participants ministered primarily in and around Lower Brule, SD. The photos in this gallery are often of their "tourist moments," when the participants had the opportunity to tour areas such as the Black Hills and Sioux Falls. June 7, Election Assembly : June 7 was the final day of the Province Election Assembly. Fr. Vien Nguyen and Dn. David Nagel were elected as Provincial Councilors. June 6, Election Assembly : June 6 was the second day of the Election Assembly for the U.S. Province. During it, three councilors were elected (pending approval of Fr. General and his council). They were: Frs. Yvon Sheehy, Jack Kurps and Jim Brackin. Other events of the day included the installation of acolyte for Fraters Greg Schill and Duy Nguyen and Frater Mark Mastin's profession of faith, and oath of fidelity and freedom in preparation for his diaconate.
